Long time Sewickley resident Doris J Harris departed this life at the age of 95 on September 8th, 2021 following a lengthy battle with brain cancer.
Doris, daughter of Jessie Johnson and Julius Higgins, was born in Coraopolis, Pennsylvania on April 17th, 1926. Inspired by her caring heart, she pursued a career as a licensed nurse practitioner. She began her career exploring general surgery at Cook County Hospital. Upon returning to Pittsburgh, she branched out into community care for the Visiting Nurses Association with a focus on obstetrics for underresourced populations.
In addition to being a loving mother to her seven children, Doris had a heart for the children of her community. As an experienced caretaker, she fulfilled a pivotal role by helping foster children establish stronger developmental skills and cultivated changes to support family reunification. She and her husband Leonard welcomed over one hundred foster children into their home where they were provided a loving and safe environment to thrive and flourish.
In addition to Doris's commitment to help others, she enjoyed planting vegetables and perennials, socializing with her Bible study groups, and extending love to many furry friends. Known for her elegant fashion sense and quick witted humor, she brought genuine joy to all who were in her presence.
Doris is preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Leonard Harris. She is survived by her children: sons, Kevin, Averell (wife, Hope), Loren (wife, Sharon), and Devon. Daughters, Lauren (husband, Tony), Taryn, and Amanda. She was the grandmother of 16 grandchildren: Lisa, Tiara, Jamie, Matthew, Michael, Shayne, Eric, Kylie, Jordan, Jade, Justin, Jason, Jalen, Juewel, Jaden, and Jaela.
