Frank T. Melnyk Obituary
Frank T. Melnyk
July 1st, 1937 – December 14th, 2020
Frank Melnyk of Edgeworth passed away at Heritage Valley Hospital on the evening of Monday, December 14th from COVID-19. His last words earlier that day were, “I love you,” to Shirley Melnyk, the love of his life and his wife of 60 years.
The youngest of 5 boys, Frank grew up in the 40s on the tough, old-school streets of Leetsdale, PA. He was a standout high school athlete playing basketball, baseball and football for Leetsdale High. After graduation he joined the Army and served with the 538th Field Artillery Battalion in Germany. Upon return from the service, he purchased a 1955 Chevy Bel Air convertible. That car, combined with his good looks and sense of humor, was enough to convince Shirley Reno to accept his marriage proposal and they were married on January 30th, 1960 at Sewickley Baptist Church. Coming from vastly different denominations (Frank was Ukrainian Orthodox) they settled on St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, which would impact their lives and faith for decades to come. Frank held leadership positions at St. Stephen’s and was a founding member of Christ Church at Grove Farm serving multiple terms on Council, men’s groups and various committees. Frank worked at Bethlehem Steel, sold office supplies for a while, and ultimately landed at USAir, from which he retired. He liked fishing but loved to play golf. Years ago, he had 15 minutes of fame with a hole-in-one at Quaker Valley Par 3 and this past summer was recognized by Knool Run Golf Course for shooting an 83 at age 83!
Frank is survived by his wife Shirley, and children Frank Jr. (Anne), Leanne Domingue, and Glenn (Jane), as well as eight grandchildren James (Jenn), Emily, Marshall, Julia; Abigail; Libby, Brooks and Parker. Frank was preceded in death by his son-in-law Andre Domingue and his brothers Mike, John and Pete. He is survived by his brother Raymond.
Frank’s service will only include immediate family and there will be no viewing. A recording of the service and photos will be posted to several family Facebook accounts the week of December 21st.
