Michael Manojlovich Obituary

Michael Manojlovich, 65, of Sewickley, passed away suddenly on February 27th, 2021. Mike was a devoted husband to Pamela S. Manojlovich (Shriner), loving father to Melodie (Paul) and Joseph (Heather) and his cherished cats, Truman, Henry and Charles.

Mike was originally from Warren, Ohio, raised by “Lottie” (Kotova) and Vladeta “Walter” Manojlovich who both immigrated to the United States after a chance meeting as prisoners of war from different countries, Yugolsavia and Ukraine, in a labor camp in 1944 in Bergen-Belsen, Germany. Mike and Pam met and fell in love in Warren and married in 1976, they moved to Sewickley in 1989 where they raised two children and many feline companions. Mike loved reading about astrophysics, science fiction, and vacationing with his family in Cook Forest.

Since 2000, Mike was a passionate, beloved teacher at Penn State (Greater Allegheny and New Kensington campuses) in the Information Science and Technology department where he focused on data mining and network security issues. Prior to his work at Penn State, Mike worked in IT in the steel industry from 1973 to 2000, having spent 10 years at Copperweld as a Telecommunications Analyst from 1990 to 2000. Mike graduated from Warren G. Harding High School (1973), Youngstown State University (1987), earned a master’s degree in Information Sciences from University of Pittsburgh (1997), and spent many years pursuing his Ph.D.

Mike will be dearly missed by many for his gentle and nurturing spirit, quick wit and easy laugh, and scholarly devotion to astronomy and understanding the cosmos. One of his favorite authors was Carl Sagan, “For small creatures such as we the vastness is bearable only through love.”

The family will be holding private services and, in the fall of 2021, Penn State New Kensington will be hosting an in-person memorial event in his honor. Please send any donations in Mike’s name to Humane Animal Rescue, 1101 Western Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15233, www.humaneanimalrescue.org.
